Love the multivoltage and resistance measurement

I'm not sure how accurate the resistance measurement is, but it quickly helped me identify some aging cells in the collection. I really appreciate the ability to leave a few AAs on four banks and while leaving four 21700 or 18650s on the others. I'm not sure if it float charges, but so far, I haven't had any reported issues with leaving batteries in there. Great setup, love the display, easy to read.

XTAR VC8S

I was looking for another VC8 Plus to speed up sorting through the large number of Lithium ion cells I have from battery pack reclamation. The plus model was sold out everywhere I looked and discovered this newer models replaces it. There are four differences from the previous model. 1. This one is able to be put in storage cell mode and grading mode in all 8 bays instead of just 4 bays in the previous model. Each set of 4 bays can be set to different modes. 2. The power supplied to the charger is USB C connection instead of a specific power adapter using a DC barrel connection. 3. The cells take a few seconds longer to engage once inserted than the old charger. The new one appears to check for internal resistance prior to kicking off the action you have it set for. I noticed that this can cause a bit confusion for the charger if a Li-Ion cell sitting around 2 volts is inserted. The internal resistance test can drop the cell voltage under 2 volts and trigger it into thinking it is a NiMH cell. This isn’t really an issue as the cell will quickly rise back above 2 volts when charge starts and it switches to li-ion mode. It’s just a quirk that the Plus model didn’t have. 4. The previous plus model would charge cells up so long as they were reading 0.05 volts or higher. This VC8S model will not do that until around 0.10 volts or higher so you may need to recharge a cell a bit prior to inserting into the VC8S before it will charge. This is especially problematic with the the internal resistance test it does first as a Li-Ion cell that is over discharged below 1.5 volts gets pulled down to a very low voltage during that internal resistance test and the charger may refuse to charge. Another quirk easily fixed by putting a little bit of charge into the cell before hand. I did not use this charger on NiMH cells yet so I cannot comment on how well it performs with NiMH cells. I can’t comment on the accuracy of the grading reports as I lack a professional capacity tester. The new Sony VTC5D's I have all read within 3% of spec across all 8 bays however, so it is good enough for my needs.

Perfect Charge

Simple to use I use a lot of 18650 batteries and this is just quick and easy to use.

Chooses in consistent charge rates.

Probably because of inaccurate internal resistance measurements, it's unable to charge certain batteries properly. Example 4 x GA batteries. Couple months old. I chose 2,000mAh for all four of them. Two were charged at 1000mAh, 1 was charged at 2,000 milliamps and the other only 500mAh. Similar results with four times mj1. This is another example. When I took those same 4 X GA batteries and put them in the S4 , it charged them properly at 2000mAh. I'm either a magnet for malfunctional electronic equipment, or others just don't pay attention.

Excellent charger: exactly what I needed

This charger is exactly what I needed. The quality is excellent, and it has all the features I could want. I also want to give a shout out to their customer service. They not only answered my questions, but went the extra mile to consolidate my order of batteries with the later order (the same day) of this charger so they all went out in one package.

  • What device/application do you use this with? I use this with 18650 Lithium Ion batteries for a Meshtastic exterior node.
